Simon Cowell - A Financial Hero

While flipping through the TV channels last night, I saw Simon Cowell sitting on the Oprah set.  Out of curiosity, I stopped for a moment to see what the occasion was that would have Simon and Oprah sitting down together.  No, it was not just a discussion of American Idol, but something far more consequential.

Oprah was doing a program about people in financial need.  The family in the spotlight was a young couple with a three year old daughter that was suffering from cancer.  Oprah’s camera crew followed around this family for several days while they spent every waking hour taking their child to various hospitals and cancer treatment centers in the Midwest.  As the story unfolded, it was explained that the family was fortunately able to pay for the medical expenses through insurance, but in order to make all of these medical appointments they had to miss work.  As a result, they were falling more and more behind financially and were in risk of losing their home.

The video ends and the family is brought out on to the Oprah set to meet Simon Cowell. Simon sheepishly says that he did not know how he could help them so he did the only thing he could think of; pay off their mortgage.  He tells them that as of 2 pm that afternoon that he completely paid off their $160,000 mortgage.  I have to admit that I have now officially broken into tears watching an Oprah program.  There are good deeds and then there are great deeds.  I don’t even know how to describe what Simon did here and how wonderful it was.

Simon Cowell is a financial hero in my book.
