Jim, Can I Stop A Collection Agency From Calling Me At Work?

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives all Americans the right to stop collectors from calling them, at work or anywhere else for that matter.  Collection agencies call people at work to embarrass and harass them, plain and simple. 

If you want to stop the harassment, simply send a certified letter and put the collector on notice that they cease and desist all collection phone calls to you.  Instruct them that they may only communicate with you in writing.  After they receive this letter, they may be subject to fines of more than $10,000 PER CALL if they continue.  If they do continue to call, keep a log of the date and time of the calls and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (see link below).

I am by no means addressing the underlying issue of paying your legal obligations (which you should do if possible), but if you don’t have the money to do so, being harassed at work is not a reasonable solution for anyone.  If you lose your job due to the calls, you won’t have any chance of being able to repay the debt and that is not good for you or the debt collector.
